TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized academic English test that evaluates a student’s ability to read, write, and speak in English.

It is divided into four sections, similar to the IELTS: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. However, unlike IELTS, the TOEFL exam is a collection of tests, the most popular of which are Internet-based tests (iBT) and Paper-based tests (PBT).

The content of the iBT and the PBT differs significantly. The iBT has a separate section for assessing spoken English, whereas the PBT does not assess speaking skills at all.

TOEFL Exam: Reading

The reading section (60-100 minutes long) evaluates your ability to understand and analyze written texts on various topics or compare multiple points of view.

The reading test can be scientific, historical, or even philosophical. Each of these texts will be followed by 12-14 questions which will define a word (intended to test your vocabulary), identify an argument or an idea (intended to test your understanding of the passage), and find a false statement (intended to test your overall comprehension of the passage).

The passages can be difficult for students that are ill-prepared for the exam, which is  why it’s important to attend TOEFL classes.

These classes help you understand the format, what to expect, and the mock tests will prep you to ace the TEOFL iBT test.

TOEFL Exam: Listening

The listening section (20 minutes) includes six tasks designed to assess your ability to express thoughts and ideas in English.

You will be given two types of audio: lecture recordings and conversation recordings. You will have four to six academic lectures and two to three casual conversations.

Each audio clip will be three to five minutes long, followed by five to six questions about the recording’s content.

Audio or lecture will only be available to you once. Some questions will allow you to listen to a portion of the recording again.

You will perform well on the exam if you practice listening to audio recordings of lectures and conversations.

Make sure you get used to hearing different accents, such as American, British, New Zealander, and Australian. There is no need to be concerned if you regularly practice!

TOEFL Exam: Speaking

The TOEFL exam speaking section is the most recent addition to the exam and one of its most important components.

You will be put through a language proficiency test. Unlike the IELTS, the TOEFL exam does not include an interviewer who will ask questions and listen to your responses.

Instead, you will be given a microphone to record your voice, and examiners will later evaluate your responses.

You’ll have little time to respond and even less time to prepare before speaking. So, keep in mind to practice timing your responses.

There will be six sections, two of which will require you to express your opinion on a common topic. This is called the independent speaking test. Here, you will be asked to listen to a recording and speak on it or read a long passage.

The integrated speaking section will require you to discuss something you read and hear and answer questions on the given passage.

You will have around 30 seconds to prepare, after which you will need to start recording your answer through the microphone.

Dont focus too much on your accent, be as clear as possible and enunciate properly.

TOEFL Exam: Writing

All of your preparation for improving your English skills culminates in the TOEFL’s final section. It evaluates your writing skills, grammar knowledge, and vocabulary usage.

Like the speaking section, the writing section includes an integrated and independent writing task.

For the independent writing task, you will be asked to write an opinion on a casual/common topic (30 minutes). You will need to write an essay from the additional reading and listening material for the integrated writing task (20 minutes).

The most effective way to prepare for the TOEFL is to write as many practice essays as possible. Keep in  mind that the writing section is evualutaed based on how well you support your argument and explain the answers, and not your opinion.

Pro Tip: Learn how to use connectors like “therefore,” “however,” and “although.”
