The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a test used to determine English competence for higher education and work in countries where English is the primary language. Educational Testing Services (ETS) created TOEFL to certify students and job seekers as proficient in English. This is a requirement for candidates who are non-native speakers.  

Different Levels of TOEFL Test

TOEFL offers a variety of examinations to assess English proficiency at various phases of life. Even an eight-year-old kid can sit for the test, not only those looking for higher studies. Here are the different levels of the TOEFL test;

TOEFL Primary: for students who are 8 and above.

TOEFL Junior: is a test for students above the age of 11.

Internet-based TOEFL Test

The TOEFL iBT (also known as Computer-Based Test) evaluates your English proficiency through the internet and computers; no paper exercises are included. And it is intended for candidates looking to get admissions in universities for advanced education. TOEFL iBT tests are conducted in every TOEFL test center where the internet is available. The iBT test is the most common and widely accepted one. 

TOEFL iBT Test Structure & Format

The test counts on four sections, Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking, to measure the level of your English. You will be allowed to answer the questions under the given time frame. Let’s discuss more below;

Section: Reading

This part of the iBT test evaluates a student’s ability to comprehend a passage. The section includes 36-56 multiple choice questions scheduled for 60 to 80 minutes. Questions in this section measure the ability of candidates to understand the information, meaning of some words or phrases given in the reading material.

Section: Writing

The written test section measures the ability of a student to write in Standard English. Test takers are given 50 minutes to complete 6 tasks. The title would mainly prompt the students to write an argumentative essay or express their perspectives.

Section: Listening

The purpose of this section is to measure the ability of students to understand spoken English. This section comes with 60-90 questions for students to answer within 60-90 minutes. Questions include audio recordings of conversations, lectures, and speeches in a multiple-choice format.

Section: Speaking

Test takers are provided with necessary equipment like headsets and microphones to answer the questions. Candidates are given 20 minutes to express an opinion on certain topics. It may include your interests and hobbies or even include the idea from reading and listening tasks. 

Who is Eligible for TOEFL iBT?

Candidates must have completed 10+2 from any recognized University in order to take the TOEFL iBT test. So, you can take this test to earn your TOEFL score if you are a high school student or are studying at a higher level.
